As a self-employed web and graphic designer, I’ve learned the hard way that burnout doesn’t just hurt you personally – it also impacts your work. That’s why I’ve created a set of self-care practices for business owners that help me stay creative, focused, and energized. And honestly, they apply to anyone running their own business, whether you’re designing websites, coaching clients, or managing multiple projects.
When you’re working on something like website design for therapists, attention to detail and emotional sensitivity are key. Therapists’ websites need to communicate trust, safety, and professionalism. If I’m tired, distracted, or burned out, I can’t make those nuanced design choices that make a website truly connect with its audience. That’s where self care for business owners comes in as a strategy.
Here are the practices I rely on:
Go to bed a half hour earlier than usual.
Don’t read work emails in the evening.
Turn off the work computer after 7 pm.
Do some form of cardio every day.
Make time daily for something you love — not something you “have” to do.
Don’t drink more than one beer during the workweek.
Enjoy your plants and your animals.
Take work phone calls by appointment only.
When I follow this routine, I show up more present for clients and make stronger creative decisions. For example, when working on website design for therapists, I can focus on creating a calming layout, thoughtful imagery, and intuitive navigation — things that require both energy and clarity. Without self-care, I’d rush or miss small details that make a big difference for someone’s professional presence.
It took me a long time to let go of the guilt of stepping away from hustle culture. I used to believe that working harder meant caring more. Now I know that working smarter, with boundaries and self-care, not only keeps me sane but directly improves the work I deliver.
What are your favorite ways to weave self care into your workday?
