What is Consistency in Graphic Design and Branding?

Consistency in graphic design and branding is ensuring your visual elements—logos, colors, typography, and imagery—are consistent across the board wherever you are visible.

If you like to do things yourself, it is important to make sure your fonts and font sizes, colors, and the feeling an image conveys are all the same. This would be for all the pages on your website, print material, and social media accounts. Let your audience know exactly who you are when viewing your brand’s different accounts on the web and print.

Inconsistency in design can make you look unprofessional as a business and I have seen many examples of it online and in print. Visual consistency signals stability and attention to detail, fostering trust. The opposite is true as well.

Here are some things NOT to do if you want to aim for visual consistency and professionalism:

Logo Use – Don’t use different versions of a logo with varying colors, sizes, or styles across different platforms.

Inconsistent Color Schemes: Do not use a range of colors that do not align with your brand’s established palette in marketing materials, website, and products. This can lead to a disjointed and unprofessional appearance.

Mixed Typography (my pet peeve): Using different fonts that do not match across advertising, packaging, and website. My main pet peeve is using mismatched fonts on a website page and all the pages of a website. Sorry.

Different Image Styles: Photographic and illustration styles that do not complement each other.

Inconsistent Layouts: Do not design layouts for print and digital media that do not follow a uniform structure or grid system. This can lead to a chaotic and unstructured look.

So there you have it. Aim for consistency and you will look like a pro whose clients and customers can trust!
