How meditation can help your business

I like to meditate for 10 to 15 minutes most mornings before I start my day, and I can really tell the difference on the days I don’t. And not in a good way.

I find that meditation makes me more clear-headed, and I have more access to creative ideas. As someone who makes a living designing websites and solving creative problems, that is pretty important.

Whatever your viewpoint or religion, I call that connecting to Source, which knows quite a bit more than I do and is happy to share knowledge if I can just get my mind to shut off for a little bit and listen.

Meditation in Business

Meditation isn’t just something you have to do sitting cross-legged on a cushion. I think it can be especially valuable for people who own their own businesses.

When you’re running a business, there is always something competing for your attention. Emails, clients, deadlines, social media, bills, website problems, new ideas, and the never-ending list of things you could be doing.

It’s easy to spend the entire day reacting instead of actually thinking.

A regular meditation practice can create a little space between all of that noise and your own thoughts. And that space can be surprisingly useful in business.

It sharpens your focus. When my mind is calmer, I can concentrate better and make decisions without having twenty other things running through my head.

It makes room for creativity. Some of my best ideas don’t come when I’m sitting at my computer trying to force them. They come when I stop trying so hard and give my brain some room to make connections.

It helps with decision-making. When you’re constantly reacting to problems, it’s easy to make decisions from stress or urgency. Meditation can help you step back, see the bigger picture, and decide what actually needs your attention.

It helps you become more comfortable with change. Business is constantly changing. Clients change their minds. Technology changes. Google changes. What worked last year may not work this year. Meditation cultivates a state of allowing rather than constantly fighting against what is happening.

And perhaps most importantly, it gives you a chance to listen.

There is a lot of advice out there about how to run a business. Some of it is useful. Some of it is not. But I also believe there is value in getting quiet enough to hear your own intuition.

For me, that’s part of the spiritual side of running a business. I work with a lot of people in the spiritual and wellness fields, and that connection between spirituality, creativity, and business is one of the reasons I created Spiritual Web Design.

You don’t have to be religious to benefit from meditation. You don’t even have to call it connecting to Source. You can simply think of it as giving your brain 10 or 15 minutes to stop processing everything coming at you.

Whatever you call it, I think that’s pretty valuable when you’re trying to build a business.

So if you’re a business owner and you’ve been thinking about starting a meditation practice, you don’t have to commit to an hour a day or make it complicated.

Start with 10 minutes.

Sit down. Get quiet. Breathe. Let the thoughts come and go.

And see what happens when you give yourself a little space to listen instead of constantly trying to figure everything out.
