My Web Designer Disappeared | Best Practices for Registering a Domain and Hosting

Affordable Web Design + Website Ownership Protection

Many people search for affordable web design when they are starting a business or trying to get online quickly. In that process, they often hire designers or agencies without fully understanding how important ownership of their domain, hosting, and website accounts really is.

Why does this matter?

When people search for affordable web design, they are usually focused on price first. But cheaper setups often cut corners in one critical area: account ownership.

Always confirm:

  • Your hosting account is in YOUR email
  • You have full admin access to your website (WordPress, Divi, Wix, etc.)
  • You control your Google Business Profile and analytics accounts

What Happens When a Web Designer Disappears

It usually looks like this:

  • No response to emails or calls
  • You can’t access your website dashboard
  • Your domain is registered under their account
  • Hosting login is unknown or locked
  • Social media accounts may also be tied to their email

At that point, even if you paid for everything, you may not legally or practically control your website anymore.

As Someone Who Has Taken Over These Situations

As someone who has taken over accounts from other designer, it is pretty annoying when I cannot finish a job because the social media and website accounts are spread out over various emails of people that the business is not in contact with anymore and there is no way to recover the information. The worse case scenario is you will have to purchase a new domain and hosting in your own name, and start all over again, from the ground up.

The Smart Way to Hire Web Design

If you are looking for affordable web design, you can still keep costs low while protecting yourself. Here’s how:

  • Pay designers for labor, NOT ownership
  • Always create accounts yourself first, then grant access
  • Use your own email for everything from day one
  • Ask for a “handover checklist” at project completion
  • Keep a written agreement that states you own all digital assets

Final Advice

Get all your online marketing and website in your own name so it is yours and you own it. Be a little bit internet savvy and do not let anyone talk you into registering it in their name just to save you time because if they do, they have all the rights to it whether you are the one paying the bill or not.
