I was just listening to this particular show on marketing with Bob Bly and it had so much good information that would be great for the people I do work for, and me, of course!  There are so many ways to market your business with little or no cost, you just have to use your brain and think out of the box and use the internet.  I would also like to say they emphasize having a website….hint, hint, hint…anyway, check it out…

Posted by Heather | New Website Design Projects | Monday 22 March 2010 3:37 pm

New website redesign for The House of Tia Crystal.  Tia is a visionary artist who recently opened her own art gallery and spiritual center in Boca Raton, Florida.  The old site was a couple of years old and we wanted to convey the colorful and spiritual feel of the place plus find out about the events happening at the center.

New Website! Vessels of Light Peace Tour

Posted by Heather | New Website Design Projects | Friday 12 March 2010 1:46 pm

Vessels of Light Peace Tour

New website for the Vessels of Light Peace Tour. This site was a collaboration between Heather (me!) and Sara Kosteva from the Fae Group. Sara designed some really beautiful flyers for the Tour and then I took over and created the website, complete with a form for people to find out more about the tour and get updates!
Don’t have a web presence yet but have printed material? I can create a small website directly from your flyer or brochure, just ask…probably more affordably than you think…

Working with other Designer’s files in Web Design

Posted by Heather | Web and Graphic Design Business | Tuesday 9 March 2010 11:59 am

I get inquiries to make changes to already existing websites sometimes. Maybe they are not working with the previous web designer anymore, maybe the designer is not doing freelance anymore, but still, the client is left hanging with changes to be made. Sometimes the change SEEMS really simple, just change the word on that button or a header. The thing is, it really would be simple if I created the original site and had the source files like the photoshop, illustrator, or flash file. Without these items, it means I have to look at what is there, recreate the whole graphic, or parts of it, just to make the simple word change. It sort of like building a house…it’s easy to add on door when you have the original blueprint, but if you don’t then it’s a best estimate at recreating the original door.

Vice versa is true too. I get requests to do things that might seem really difficult but don’t take me too long, especially when you know what you are doing. I had a client who wanted me to edit a photo of her with a few rocks in the background that she did not want there. Well, I made them disappear in photoshop and replaced them with some nice green grass. She asked me how I did it. My answer…magic.

My point? Some things that seem really simple, especially if you haven’t worked in web design, are really not so simple. Other things, if you know what you are doing, don’t take long at all!

Best screen size for designing a website?

Posted by Heather | Web and Graphic Design Business | Wednesday 3 March 2010 5:23 pm

I recently had a few issues with screen size when designing a website.  My first situation was my client thought the web page size was too big for the screen.  She was proofing the site on a laptop computer probably around 1024×768.  So, even after explaining the trend towards screens getting bigger, I shrunk the home page down a bit to fit on the screen.  She was happy.  The thing is, on my end I have a laptop and a desktop and it looked a bit small on both, but I wasn’t going to argue, as long as she was happy so I kept it the way it was, small.  The second one was with a client who I am guessing had a big computer screen since she liked the fonts in her site to around 9 or 8 points.  I was able to read it easily enough but there are probably many people who might find it too small.  I try to shoot for 12 points to just stay in the middle.

What am I trying to say?  Well, the trend is going towards big computer screens and although it is impossible to please everyone and have a website look exactly the same in every browser and every screen…it’s good to shoot for the middle ground.  I try to use a width of around 1000 pixels for websites and keep the font 12 or 11 points, but there are more and more people out there with tv sized computer screens so its a safe bet to begin designing larger…

Here are some stats…interesting…or boring…but good to look at…
