Do Web Designers fix computers?

Posted by Heather | Web and Graphic Design Business | Sunday 29 November 2009 9:49 pm

Computer Repair and TroubleshootingThis one doesn’t. The thing is, I DO tend to get requests from clients asking me to fix their computer. I must emphasize although I work on a computer everyday, and I know a few ins and outs to get it running better; I am not trained nor do I even know how troubleshoot computer issues. Here are some of the things I can handle and am pretty good at:

  • - Web Design including
    - Ecommerce Web Design
  • - Setting up hosting
  • Setting up and designing a custom blog
  • - Setting up a domain specific email to go with your website
  • - Troubleshooting a website including fixing layout and design issues, paypal issues…etc.
  • - Updating and adding new content to your existing website
  • - and more having to do with web DESIGN…
  • Some things I have been asked to do, but haven’t a clue where to start or begin:

  • - Your computer screen going blank or freezing up
  • - Virus or adware removal
  • - Slow computer or internet
  • - …and lots more!
  • For the second list, I have always been told rebooting your computer works. Rebooting your modem and wireless works wonders too, yet that is the extent of my computer or server troubleshooting knowledge.

I once had one client who was having problems with adware on his computer tell me the website I designed for him was responsible for his computer issues. From what I know, unless it’s a really questionable website, which this one wasn’t, then browsing to a particular website shouldn’t give you a problem.

I think people tend to think that because I work in a technical field then I should know how to do these things. I get anxiety attacks when MY computers begin having problems. I also know that like web design, if you do not know what you are doing, you can REALLY screw things up. That is why I stay hands off and don’t give advice about something I do not know much about. But my friend Jack of Computer Guy Florida does…please call HIM…when you are having computer issues. He can even log in remotely and fix up your laptop or computer so it’s running brand spanking new…and call or email me for your web site design or maintenance issues!

Why is downtime good for business productivity? Work smarter

Posted by Heather | Small Business | Thursday 19 November 2009 11:21 am

Last week I found myself wrapping up a few projects and had a few days of downtime. Just like everybody else, I go through times where I am so busy I can’t think of much else other than the project at hand and other times not so. I used to worry…thinking I had to be busy all the time and if I wasn’t then I just wasn’t being effective. Not so. Why is this?

    • Your brain and body cannot be in full speed ahead at all times. Just look at nature; a plant grows in spurts, then rests to gain strength for the next growth spurt. If we are at full speed all the time, we don’t get the time to rejeuvenate and get ready for the times when we do need it.
    • You can access more creative ideas and find solutions to problems with downtime. I know this to be true even in small increments. If I am working on troubleshooting a website and just can’t figure out what is going wrong, sometimes just taking a spin around the block is all I need to get me headed in the right direction. Ideas seem to pop into my head when I just take a break and allow them in.
    • Downtime allows for research and solutions if you use it effectively. Case in point, I was working on figuring out a way to get my website layout designs into a web ready format quicker and easier and a bit of time surfing the internet gave me my solution…I wouldn’t have even had the time to do research if I just kept plowing along being busy.
    • Law of attraction – you can do all the manifesting you want, and taking action, but there is also the last step of letting go. How many times have you been happily surprised at the resolution of a sticky situation just when you decided to take your attention off of it? It’s called letting go and trust.

Our society tends to place importance on work and results but sometimes you can get the best result by just taking a break from it…work smarter, not harder!

    Logo Design for Organic/Green Company

Posted by Heather | Holistic Logo Designs | Thursday 12 November 2009 1:46 pm

New logo for Glorious Garden, a new company that specializes in organic and environmentally friendly skincare products.  Their line is completely organic, not tested on animals, and environmentally friendly.  I like to draw a logo concept on paper before the computer because I don’t want computer restrictions to interfere with the design;  it’s the blueprint for when I take it over to illustrator and begin adding texture and color.

I gave three different concepts, but this is the one he chose.  I wanted to go off the word “glorious” with a sun image.  He wanted something with natural colors and natural beauty with a new age flair.  The result is that I spent alot of time going through some mandala books I have and chose a few elements from each to come up with something unique.  The original drawing had sun beams coming off, but it looked better without them even though the same blueprint was used.

Online Testing service for your business & website – e courses…etc.

Posted by Heather | New Technology and Services | Monday 9 November 2009 2:02 pm

Another item I found by accident…an online testing service you can use for your business or website.  I know many clients who can and would like to do e-courses and be able to test their students…this service makes it easy.  They have free and paid subscriptions.  The paid service looks very affordable.

    Google launches Commerce Search

Posted by Heather | New Technology and Services | Thursday 5 November 2009 4:37 pm

I was just checking out this new service from google, it looks like google is getting in on shopping carts…all looks good, except they do not have the price listed: you have to email to find out.  I wonder why can’t they just list how much it costs right on the website?  Some people are looking to get information easily, like me, and who are too lazy to email.  Otherwise, I like the search functions, keyword searches, automatic spelling fixes for products…etc.

    www.MYStarSapphire.com

New website design for Star Sapphire, a privately owned yacht custom built and launched in 2007.  I had alot of fun designing it with the flash animation intro and header for each page.  The site includes video clips and media it has been featured in.

Cloud Angels, Manifesting, and the Self Employment Void

Posted by Heather | Web and Graphic Design Business | Tuesday 3 November 2009 5:35 pm

This photo snapped when I was sitting on the steps to my apartment a few weeks ago.  The background story is the past two weeks I was at the end of finishing up a project and had nothing lined up to work on the next week…how was I going to pay rent and bills?  A little worrisome.  I do everything in my power via actions to keep the flow of work going but sometimes these things happen so at that time I use prayer and visualization…happy clients, big fun projects, contracts being signed, checked being written for deposits…seeing myself beginning the project and it going smoothly.  I was getting anxious because my manifesting wasn’t coming to me as fast as I would like.  The day I took the photo I just got back from a client meeting…contract signed, deposit…both of us happy and excited to begin!  I would say my prayers were answered!

Does anybody else get signs in answer to questions or prayers?
